Psilocybin and Brain Connectivity

Psilocybin, a primary psychoactive compound in psychedelic mushrooms, has been shown through fMRI studies to significantly increase connectivity between different brain networks. It also promotes neurogenesis (the formation of new brain cells) and alters thought processes. These effects might have helped early hominids to think more creatively and improve communication, contributing to the 'Stoned Ape Hypothesis' proposed by Terence McKenna. This hypothesis suggests that psilocybin played a role in the rapid development of human cognition, language, and culture.

Psilocybin vs. Magic Mushrooms

'Psilocybin' and 'magic mushrooms' are often used interchangeably, but magic mushrooms contain several psychoactive compounds, not just psilocybin. Researchers believe in an 'entourage effect,' where the combination of these alkaloids works synergistically, enhancing the mushrooms' beneficial and perceptual effects. Notable compounds include Baeocystin, Norbaeocystin, and Aeruginascin, the latter being likened to 'the CBD of magic mushrooms' for its potential supportive effects without altering perceptions.

Choosing Your Mushroom

With over 180 species of psilocybin-containing mushrooms, Psilocybe cubensis is the most commonly cultivated, particularly strains like Golden Teachers and Penis Envy. While potency can vary even within the same strain, Psilocybe cubensis is generally easier to grow and commonly available on the black market. Starting with a strain like Golden Teachers is recommended for beginners due to its moderate potency.

To accurately gauge potency, at-home psilocybin potency test kits are available, making it easier to determine proper microdosing amounts. If you're purchasing on the black market, it's advisable to ask the vendor for strain information, as this can help you better understand the potency and effects.

Accessing Shrooms

Psilocybin mushrooms are still illegal federally in the U.S., although they may become legal for guided use within a few years. Currently, obtaining mushrooms typically requires buying from the black market or growing them yourself. Growing kits and spores are legal in most states but cultivation is not. Psilocybin has been decriminalized in some cities, offering additional legal protections, but it remains illegal federally. In Canada, some mail-order psilocybin dispensaries operate in a legal gray area, offering products but facing legal risks.

Methods for Microdosing Shrooms

Common microdosing methods include:

  • Tea: Using decaffeinated tea with optional ginger to minimize nausea.
  • Capsules: Using a scale to measure doses accurately and a grinder to prepare the mushrooms.

Essential tools include a reliable scale and a coffee grinder. For tea, additional supplies include tea bags, a strainer, ginger, and honey.

Stacking

Stacking involves combining a microdose with other herbs or medicinal mushrooms, a concept popularized by mycologist Paul Stamets. Commonly stacked mushrooms include Lion's Mane, Reishi, Chaga, and Cordyceps, each with its own potential health benefits, such as improved focus, immune support, and reduced inflammation. While there is no research specifically on stacking, Stamets' Stack, a popular combination, includes Lion's Mane, psilocybin, and niacin. However, this combination should be approached cautiously as it can produce an uncomfortable flushing sensation due to niacin.

Storing Your Shrooms

Dried mushrooms, if stored properly in an airtight container with silica packets, can last up to a year. For microdosing, it's recommended to prepare a 30-day supply and store the remainder whole to maintain potency.

Note: Psychedelic retreats do not replace medical or psychotherapeutic treatment.

Research Context

Psilocybe cubensis strains like Golden Teachers contain approximately 0.6-0.7% psilocybin by dry weight, while strains like Penis Envy can contain up to 1.5%. Significant potency variation was found even within single flushes of the same strain — making precise measurement essential for microdosing.

Exercise

Practical tip:

If you choose psilocybin for microdosing, use a precision scale with 0.01g accuracy. Grind a larger batch and mix thoroughly to average out potency variations between individual mushrooms. Store in an airtight container with silica packets.
